Magnetite

Magnetite was discovered by Haidinger in 1845, the chemical formula Fe3O4 (iron-iron oxide) is a cubic mineral. This iron ore is the oldest known substance with magnetic properties. Magnetite is a cubic mineral forming granular and solid aggregates or scattered grains. Its well-limited octahedral crystals are not very abundant. The crystals are of the octahedral type, steel gray to black, metallic shiny and opaque. The aggregates are usually coarse to medium grained, they can be oolitic or spherulitic. The color is always black with a black scratch. Metallic luster and conch shell. More info
