Pyrolusite

The name Pyroluzite was created by combining 2 Greek words pyr - fire and loyó - myth. It occurs as a product of the oxidation of iron ores containing Mn or primary Mn ores. It was usually formed by the conversion of manganite. They also form concretions on the bottoms of the oceans. Most often they form solid, fibrous and grape aggregates, coatings, dendrites, stalactites, etc. Crystallized is rarer. The color is black to dark steel gray. More info
