Cinnabarite is a mercuric sulphide, HgS. Cinnabarite is the most common mercury red in nature, a highly toxic compound. I have known them since ancient times. The name comes from either India or Persia - zinjifrah (lost). It is bright red, crimson red to brownish red. They form earthy, solid, fine- or coarse-grained aggregates as well as limited crystals.
