Crocoite

This specimen of Crocoite comes from Germany, Saxony from the locality Callenberg. This smaller specimen measures 4.4 x 2.7 x 3.1 cm. Crocoite produces orange-red, glassy, partially translucent, elongated crystals reaching a length of up to 11 mm.

Crocoite

The name crocoite comes from the Greek κρόκος "crocon" = saffron. Crocoite is a relatively rare mineral, but very popular and valued among mineral collectors for its aesthetic qualities. It is deep red, occurs in the form of columnar to acicular longitudinally grooved crystals, it also forms crusts. It is very fragile, translucent, shiny. It is formed by ventilation of galena in an environment of chromium-rich igneous rocks.
