Barite, formerly mined, is barium sulphate, BaSO4. The name comes from the Greek barys - heavy. Barite is really recognizable by its density, it is much heavier than many other minerals. It occurs on hydrothermal veins, but also in sedimentary rocks. It is commonly found as tailings in ore mining. The barite can be colorless, white, yellow, gray, brown, blue, etc.
